报告摘要：Based on a recent nation-wide representative survey of Chinese households, we explore the impact of religion on charitable giving among Chinese adults. We find that compared to other people, religious believers are significantly more likely to contribute to charity and contribute higher amounts on average. A further analysis shows that religious adherents contribute on a voluntary basis, while the positive influence of religion does not exist when donation is mobilized by government agencies or employers. We apply several econometrics techniques to deal with the truncated nature of data on charitable giving. In addition, we test the robustness of our results by controlling for the potential endogeneity of religious belief. Our results indicate that religion can contribute positively to the building of a civil society in China.
